At the August Board meeting Dr. Daisy Lee voluntarily took a three day furlough from her contract. Now all of management, CSEA, and the Classified unit have three day furloughs for the upcoming school year. It should be noted however, that a three day furlough from a classified (or certificated) employee working 180 days is a bigger pecentage cut than three days from someone in management who works around 220 days.
The Certificated Unit is now the only group without a contract. It would be easy for the District to arrive at an agreement with the Certificatged unit if it was just about a three day furlough. However, the District has also taken the three Buy Back Days, wants to increase average class sizes by three students and increase adjunct and other responsibilities. It seems the District is intent on balancing its budget on the backs of teachers.
It is our hope that the Federal legislation recently passed by Congress will ease the financial pressure in the distirct and allow for an agreement to be reached at the next bargaining session on August 30.
