It is with deep sorrow AFT-Maryland shares the passing of Nat LaCour. Nat was a high school teacher in New Orleans and got his start as a union leader who was at the forefront of school integration in New Orleans. Additionally, Nat was the first Executive Vice President AFT and Secretary-Treasurer Emeritus of the national federation.
Local 527 membership elected Mr. LaCour vice-president in 1969 and then president in 1971, a post he held until he was promoted to a position in the American Federation of Teachers in 1998. He transformed Local 527 from a relatively small group of mostly segregated teachers into the largest local in the state. In 1972, amidst top-down faculty desegregation, Mr. LaCour helped orchestrate a merger with the mostly-white NEA local to form UTNO: The United Teachers of New Orleans. The merger was unprecedented:
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced change upon us. Despite the negatives, this crisis brings the opportunity to change poor building environmental conditions, improve telework policies, and bring awareness of the value we bring to Maryland.
It is with my deepest regret that I announce the passing of Brother Allen D. Robinson. Bro. Robinson serviced the citizens of Baltimore as a dedicated employee, executive vice president, COPE and Social Committee Chair for the City Union of Baltimore (CUB) Local #800, AFL-CIO. Bro. Allen was a dear friend to all in our union and labor movement.
