"Back in the 90's I had a problem getting my expenses reimbursed by the state. Even though I wasn't a member, AFT-Kansas said, 'We can help you with that.' And they did! The message to me was: the union can get it done. So I joined. Last year with AFT-Kansas at the bargaining table, my guys got a ten percent raise in addition to what everyone else got in the legislature. Once again, the union got it done. Now we're rising to new challenges. We need better opportunities for employees and their families. We also need a more positive, less hostile working environment. Our International union, AFT, is teaching us how to recognize the workplace monsters we have to fight, and what weapons to use. It's never easy but, like always, we know that the union gets it done."
